Miracle League opens season at Pfeil Miracle Field in Mishawaka

MISHAWAKA, Ind. (WNDU) - The Pfeil Miracle Field in Mishawaka had its own opening day today, with the first pitch coming from Mayor Dave Wood.The Miracle League gives kids with disabilities a chance to play the game on their terms, with adapted fields and a simple rule: every player gets their moment.In the opener, the Cubs faced the Padres, and every player got a hit, ran the bases and came home to score a run. Members of the Notre Dame baseball team served as buddies, coaching and cheering the players on.Parents and players reactRaven Armstead, a parent, said, “That was so exciting. He woke up, he’s like, ‘Mom, is it baseball day?’ And I’m like, ‘It’s baseball day.’ So, he put on his jersey, and he just had the biggest smile. That just made my mama heart so happy.”Brilliance Armstead, a Miracle League of Northern Indiana baseball player, said, “My friends, they’re nice. I like playing here. I really like it here.”Next games set for SeptemberThe next Miracle League games are set for Saturday, Sept. 12.The league is still looking for volunteers to serve as buddies, helping players during the games and making sure everyone gets their turn.Stay up to date on local news with WNDU on-air and online.
